To celebrate bonfire night, Trust staff and local residents in the Coombe Farm area of Maidstone held a successful community event. Community Safety Officer Tracey Barrett explains how it came about…

In October a local resident suggested holding a bonfire and fireworks event for the children in Tovil/Coombe Farm. We thought it was a great idea, but we needed to raise funds - the same tenant suggested holding a boot fair. This took place on 20th October 2007.

After much planning and persuasion the bonfire and firework event took place on Saturday 3rd November and what a success it was.

The queue started early - We had jacket potatoes with beans, cheese and chilli as well as hot soup. As the beat from disco encouraged old and young alike to dance together, the bonfire blazed ever higher whilst faces aglow gathered to watch from a safe distance. The fireworks were brilliant and very exciting.

From babies to grannies people were smiling and everyone enjoyed themselves.

Maidstone Housing Trust colleagues Steve McGlen, Lorraine Ticehurst , Renee Mills and myself were kept on our toes ensuring everyone was safe, happy and enjoying themselves.

Kent & Medway Fire service came to visit us and PCSO Matt Lettington stayed throughout the whole event to provide an extra set of eyes for us, and was later joined by his colleague Sgt Jim Watson.

We have a lot of people to thank including Jackie Vernau of the local Residents Assocation and the other ladies who worked very hard in the kitchen keeping up with the very constant flow of hungry faces at their counter, despite the power cut and the microwave breaking down. We awarded them with tins of choccies of course!
