Dangerous Oak Tree to be felled

The Oak tree close to the junction of Bell Road and Brishing Lane in Park Wood has been identified as potentially dangerous, and owners of the land Maidstone Housing Trust are taking action. The tree is also within the development area of new affordable homes.

Richard Cannacott, the Trust’s Development and Regeneration Manager, said “Our first report on the trees in this area suggested that this tree might be diseased, and a further report has shown that, even though the tree looks outwardly healthy, it is decaying from the inside and could be a danger. With the winter approaching, we believe it is best to fell the tree so that no one will be injured should there be a sudden collapse”.

It is proposed to keep the tree trunk in the area of the new development to provide a habitat for wildlife. The other mature trees on the site are being retained and incorporated into the redevelopment layout.

The first phase of development is nearing completion. Tenants will be moving in over the next six months, allowing the demolition of the remaining blocks of flats in the area. The second phase of the new development will be started in the Spring, with new homes in Phase Two due for completion around the end of 2007.
